Japan Holidays

Holidays are a special time of the year all around the world. Japan is no exception and they have a slew of special times. Japanese holidays are steeped in great tradition.

The most important is probably the New Year. This is far more celebrated and loved than Christmas. It is so beloved, in fact that many businesses close for three days! This is a special time where family members come to be together.

That’s not all of the Japanese holidays that are celebrated in January. The coming of age for 20-year-old men and women is on the 2nd Monday of January. This is a great time for the younger set that is met with a lot of celebration.

Some of the holidays are based on ancient tradition. National Foundation day celebrates when the first Japanese emperor was crowned. This is a well-respected holiday for the history buffs out there.

There are two similar Japanese holidays. One is Valentine’s Day where women give men the chocolates. The other is the national holiday of White Day. Men give treats to women instead.

Constitution day is another that is based in history. This is in remembrance of the Japanese constitution and when it was instituted.

Many Japanese people revered their ancestors. Obon is a great festival where those who have passed are remembered.

In addition to remembering the past it is also great to remember those who are doing great works now. One of the neatest Japanese holidays is culture day. This is where others honor those who do a great job with cultural activities. This holiday even turns into a town even and is a national holiday.

In November there is a Thanksgiving Day where all those who work hard are honored. There is a lot of reverence that is paid during Japanese holidays!

Japanese holidays can tell you a lot about the country as a society. The efforts of others are very well respected and are celebrated. There are many great holidays meant for a variety of purpose in Japan. These are just the tip of the ice burg as there are many that are not declared as national holidays.
