Christmas in Japan

Christmas is a very special time of year in many different countries. It is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus and to gather with friends and family. That fact does not extend everywhere though! Christmas is Japan is not as widespread as some people believe.

Though many of us take celebrating Christmas for granted it is just not a very well practiced holiday in the country of Japan. It is similar to the idea that many around the world are not familiar with the holidays that originate out of Japan.

One major reason for this is that a vast majority of the population are not Christians. Christmas is a celebration of Christ’s birth so it is very understandable that the holiday is not widespread. They have their own rich traditions, but some still find it exciting to celebrate this one.

Even though Christmas in Japan is not traditionally celebrated it is catching on. You can even walk into some stores near Christmas as see Santas on display as well as hear Christmas carols playing. There are even Christmas trees that are starting to pop up in individual homes.

Japan does have its own, more traditional ways of celebrating this holiday. They have the Daiku of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. There is also a Christmas cake that bakers sell in celebration. Perhaps that is a tradition that should be adopted everywhere!

Though these traditions are great they don’t go nearly to the extent that Christmas celebrating countries go to. They are not at a loss, however. The New Year’s celebrations are where much of the fun is during the holiday season.

It is important to keep in mind that Christmas in Japan is celebrated in its own special way. They certainly don’t miss these traditions, as many people who live there do not know them. The Japanese culture is very rich in its own customs.

The lack of a Christmas celebration is certainly to be respected for the Japanese people, as most are not of the Christian faith. Even so there are some Christmas traditions that people have. Christmas in Japan may catch on faster than we think!
